Last week, during one of my usual trips to Filiberto's (mmmm, Carne Asada!), I came across a flyer. The word "Coyote" caught my eye. Being a sucker for anything Combs, I picked it up and scanned what appeared to be an invitation.
The Coyotes Wrestling Team is having a Spring Break Wrestling Camp on March 14 – 18!
The cost is $35 per child [with sibling discounts available].
The flyer says that the camp is open to students in grades K thru 8.
This is where I became confused. The high school was putting on an event - but wasn't inviting their own high schoolers? A typo for sure, right?! I decided to call the number on the flyer; I got the coach’s voicemail. I left a jumbled message about wanting more information - and to please call me back.
Within a few minutes, my office phone rang and I had the pleasure of speaking with Coach Flowers. After I explained who I was and why I wanted the information - the coach set me straight.
The reason why the high schoolers were not being invited to take part in the camp is because THEY were the ones HOLDING the camp. The current Coyotes wrestlers (our Combs students) are giving back to their community and up-and-coming mat enthusiasts by hosting their younger peers at CHS during Spring Break. They are teaching what they've been taught. I LOVE it! Swoon!!
Coach Flowers, on his Combs Wrestling website states “The camp will introduce the sport of wrestling through positive engagement and interaction where each participant will learn the basics in the sport of wrestling and the intermediate wrestler will learn to refine their skills. The participants are divided into age groups and weight classes to ensure that each receives a positive experience.”
If you want to support Combs, the Wrestling team and give your child something fun and engaging to do this Spring Break [that does not involve Call of Duty and X-Box controllers], I suggest you check out the details [location & times]. You can also call Coach Flowers @ 480-882-3540 x1827 or email him at coyotewrestling@gmail.com.
If your child takes part in the camp, come back and let me know how they did! Maybe when my youngest is old enough [next year], I will be sending him to Coach Flowers! ;)
